A Forecasting Platform Trader Earned $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.
A single trader, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
But the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.
A handful of other traders also profited significant sums from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to political events.
This sector were examined under the last presidential term. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.
Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
